Suddenly it's 1968 as the intense competition between neo-classic pony cars reaches a fever pitch. Ford's Mustang and Chevy's Camaro are slugging it out in the sales race, with the Camaro edging out Mustang sales for the last few months. But the hungry, aggressive new regime at Ford is not taking this challenge lightly. Ford has announced a list of serious upgrades for the 2011 Mustang, starting with a brand new, more powerful V-6 that beats the Camaro in mileage by one m.p.g. highway and in horsepower by one pony.
The new V-6 makes 305 HP and 280 lb-ft.of torque--better numbers than the V-8 of just a few years back.
The 2011 Mustang will also boast new transmissions, aerodynamic upgrades to its bodywork, tweaks to the suspension, bigger brakes, new steering, and updated instruments. Ford is a serious car company now. . . and that means never resting on its laurels.
Ford's CEO Alan Mulally has lit a fire under the company that just seems to get hotter and hotter. The all new Taurus, Lincoln's revised line-up, the rockin' new Fiesta, and the hybrid Fusion are winners all. And reassuring signs that America can compete with the world's best. Unfortunately, American car companies have been crippled by unimaginative, stodgy bean counters that have all but destroyed our native brands.
The Mustang and Camaro are uniquely American cars. No other country quite gets it in terms of pony cars. But these two need no excuses, they're both competitive on the world stage. And, even better for U.S. car buyers, the fierce competition between the two brands is inspiring some rapid evolution of America's sweetheart, the Ford Mustang.
