Fired Michael's employee wins 8.1 million dollars in wrongful termination lawsuit.

Imagine this, you are on a six week medical leave from work due to chemotherapy treatment for cancer. While on leave, the company you work for is pressuring you to come back early because they are convinced you could fix the store's failing operations. This is what happened to Kara Jorud; she was forced to return to work while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer (she later had a double mastectomy). If that was not bad enough, she was also harassed by the district manager for missing days (after coming back early) while working and going through chemotherapy. When she was eventually fired, she was told it was for theft and also the missed days of work. They also said she violated company policy.

Being fired caused a strain on her since she was in the midst of cancer treatments. She had to quickly marry her fiancee so she could be added to his health insurance because she lost coverage with the firing. Her daughter split her high school classes with a full time job to help out with the bills. She (feeling wronged by what happened to her) filed a lawsuit against the company. Two years later, the jury ruled she did not violate company policy (no such policy existed) and she was "unjustly fired". She received 4 million for pain and suffering, 4 million for punitive damages and 100,000 for lost wages (the judge has reserved the right to increase that into 1 million).

I just wrote an article on how 3 out 4 workers are at the point of breakdown. It is getting very tough out there in the workforce. Many companies are using this bad economy to take advantage of their employees. It is good to see someone win "the battle", and even better seeing that her suffering would not go in vain. I would hope that more companies would "ease up" and treat their employees right, but I am sure that is from my mouth to "stone ears".
