Sticky-fingered cops pocket cash during gambling raid

If you're a crooked cop who plans to stuff his pockets with ill-gotten loot during the course of your duties, you probably should make sure that the security cameras in the establishment you're raiding aren't pointed right at you. That's the lesson learned by a few New York City police officers who were captured on video during a Nov. 14, 2007 raid on Beer Goggles, a Staten Island, New York bar.

Captured on camera are officers openly shoving cash in their pockets and sharing it out with colleagues.

The video featured in the corruption trial of Sgt. William Lewis, which has not yet concluded, before landing on YouTube.

I used to live on Staten Island and I used to hang out with a lot of cops. Staten Island precints are pretty cushy assignments, usually reserved for the favorites on the force. I wonder when I'm going to stop being even a little surprised by news items like this. I guess the real surprise is when these criminals in uniform get caught. Still... I think if we want to reduce crime in our cities, the first step we should take is to eliminate police.
