Will basketball icon Richie Farmer run for governor of Kentucky?

Kentucky’s Agriculture Commissioner, Richie Farmer, has been going around the state the past couple of weeks suggesting that he might consider being the Republican candidate for Governor in 2011. So far, Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear is the only major candidate who has entered the race.  Beshear and his running mate, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, have already started fundraising.

As all true “blue” citizens of the commonwealth know, Richard Dwight "Richie" Farmer, Jr., former shooting guard for the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team, was one of four seniors on the 1991 – 1992 team known as "The Unforgettables". His No. 32 jersey was retired in tribute to his success on the boards.

Farmer was elected Commissioner of Agriculture in November of 2003, and was reelected for a second four-year term in 2007. In his last campaign, he won by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, while Kentucky’s incumbent Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher lost by 17 percentage points. Farmer and Trey Grayson, who won reelection as Secretary of State, became the first Republicans to win statewide office in an election won by a Democratic gubernatorial candidate since 1915.

“I’m looking at options and seeing what people are saying,” Farmer told the Associated Press. “We may look at doing a poll a little later on.” “I’m still concentrating on being the best commissioner I can possibly be,” he said. “I guess it’s flattering that people would consider you, and look at you that way. But, by the same token, I’m not getting blown away by it.”

Born in Clay County, Farmer worked as an investment advisor, after graduating from University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management. He lives in Frankfort with his wife Rebecca and their three sons, Trey, Thomas and Tate.
