The Department of Defense announced Tuesday that 23-year-old Sgt. Jason D. Calo, of Lexington, Kentucky, was killed on August 22, while serving in Afghanistan. Sgt. Calo, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, NC, was supporting combat operations in Helmand province when he was killed.
Sgt. Calo joined the Marine Corps in November 2006, and was promoted to sergeant July 1, 2009. He was previously deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, from September 2008 to April 2009, and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in June, 2010.
The Department of Defense lists Sgt. Calo’s home of record as Lexington, Ky. He is a graduate of Mancelona (Michigan) High School, and The Traverse City Record Eagle reports Calo's survivors include his wife, Sarah, a 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son.
His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He is survived by his wife and child, among others.
As is customary, whenever a Kentucky service member is killed in action, Gov. Steve Beshear will order that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of Sgt. Calo’s interment, for which arrangements are still pending.
