Christmas officially comes to Louisville

Without a doubt, there’s not a better spot on the face of the Earth to be, on the night after Thanksgiving, than the corner of Fifth and Jefferson Streets in downtown Derby City, for the annual Light Up Louisville festivities. From our fourth-floor office on Fifth Street, your Louisville City Hall Examiner can watch the whole shebang and report directly to you without suffering the not-too-far-above-freezing temperatures.

Light Up Louisville has officially kicked off its 29th holiday season celebration, by setting aglow thousands of lights in Jefferson Square, at Sixth and Jefferson. Earlier in the day, people participated in the Run Run Rudolph 5K Run/Walk. A few hours later there was a Winter Wonderland Holiday parade, with floats decorated with lights. Santa Claus arrived at 8 p.m. and flipped the switch for Light Up Louisville at 8:30 p.m.

And, for the sixth year running, rows and rows of Christmas trees are on sale at Waterfront Park. Many varieties of trees and other holiday greenery like wreaths are available, provided by the Jecker and Thompson Tree Markets. The two vendors are renting the Waterfront area for the holiday season and that money will go to maintain the park. The Christmas tree sale will be open through Christmas, with free customer parking.
