Holiday cheers in Sacramento

It's a Most Wonderful Time in Sacramento  by Barbara L. Steinberg©

So much to see and do this time of year. Down in Old Sacramento, the holiday tree is always stunning against the backdrop of historic buildings. This year's official tree lighting is scheduled for November 25th at 6pm.  The first annual Theatre of Lights begins the same night, and runs through January 3, 2010. Living history storyteller, Mark Twain, will delight young and old.

Speaking of history, the Carnival of Lights  --fashioned after Sacramento's Grand Electric Carnival inspired in 1895 -- is sure to light up the night. The event will signal the re-opening of St. Rose of Lima Park and 7th Street. The Carnival will run through January 3.

Over in Midtown, look for other colorful sights of the season at Sutter's Fort State Park  including the wonderful Candlelight Tours. The 1st Annual Sacramento Festival of Lights Parade is scheduled for December 5th. The mile-long route will begin at 17th Street and Capitol Avenue and continues up to 19th Street, over to L Street and down L Street to the Capitol building.  Marching bands, floats, dance groups, and themed cars are part of the celebration from 6pm until....

Though a permanent fixture on the Westfield Downtown Plaza, the Venetian Olivia & Mom Lynette Holiday Ride Credit Barbara Steinberg 2008 2 Carousel seems particularly festive this time of year. Fun for kids and grown-ups, the Italian-made carousel sits outside Macy's near River City Brewing and operates daily. Bundle up and go for a spin.

Sacramento's 27th Annual Santa Parade will stroll through town on November 28th. Celebrate the holiday season with a special visit from Santa Claus. The parade begins at Sacramento City Hall.

Make this a full day of fun and exploration in Old Sacramento. Two-hour parking garage validations are provided with $5 purchase in Old Sacramento and Downtown Plaza. So how about a little Santa and shopping to round-out your Saturday! Check out shops in Old Sacramento that carry California-made gifts at Taylor's Art & Soul or Visions of Eden. Don't miss Sacramento Sweets...there's nothing quite so wonderful as warm taffy! And a little holiday cheer might include wine tasting at Discover California Wine Bar & Tasting Room.

This year's Sacramento holiday ice rink is moving from St. Rose of Lima Park to Midtown Sacramento at 20th & K streets.  Scheduled to open November 20 and run through January 18th, the rink will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Santa's Toy Shoppe opens November 28th at 18th & L streets. Take pictures with Santa, enjoy stories and all the sights of the holiday season.

For all those special holiday gift-giving ideas, support local merchants from Midtown to Old Sacramento.
