Proclaimed to be "the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan" by the former Ambassador of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden provides a peaceful getaway from fast paced city life. The garden is located in Washington Park next to the International Rose Test Garden and is easily accessible by car, bike or bus.

The garden was opened in the summer of 1967, but Portland's interest in Japanese culture started in 1959 when Sapporo became a sister city of Portland. Since then, the garden has grown to become one of Portland's best attractions.
Admission is $8, which may seem a bit high for a garden, but it does include a guided tour and is absolutely worth it when you see how much careful thought and planning has been put into each detail in the garden. Almost every week, the garden also hosts events ranging from tea ceremonies to bamboo fence building to gardening lectures. This weekend, the once a year Moonviewing festival is being held from 5:30-8pm. Be sure to visit the Events page of the garden website to find out more.
