UPDATE: The Minneapolis Uptown Market: Hottest new street fest in town

Below is a list of more new vendors who will be on display at the Uptown Market. They are listed beneath The Chef Shack.

By name alone, one may assume the Uptown Market is simply a farmers market and nothing more. But like the Magic Bus Cafe's all-beef hot dogs, you only need to dig a bit deeper to discover how much more lies beneath the surface. Since its debut in June 2009, Minneapolis' hottest new street fest of food and arts has gained tremendous speed and city-wide attention in the past few months. Several local news stations have covered their past two events, and street chatter has surfaced about what's to come. As the Uptown Market heads into their third event on Sunday, August 16th, they promise bigger, better, and hotter than ever.

Just be careful not to call it a farmers market. While the Uptown Market simply self-promotes by name alone, organizers are careful to not represent themselves exclusively as a farmer's market. The Uptown Market is more of an art fair/farmer's market hybrid, according to Kate Herr, a public relations organizer.

There has already been a significant growth in both visitors and vendors between the first and second events. Organizers hope to deliver even bigger on Sunday, with more music and entertainment, delicious food samples, and greater selection of locally grown produce.

We really try to welcome newcomer vendors too- last time we had a salsa vendor who's just starting to turn his salsa-making hobby into a business.

The Uptown Market's more established vendors have included Lucille's Kitchen Garden (awesome jams), Great Harvest Bakery, a roasted sweet corn stand, and the Magic Bus Cafe, a hippie hot dog stand/mini cafe. And then there are the farmers, 'most of whom don't really have brands, but do have great locally grown produce,' says Herr.

We were really psyched when some of the chefs from Uptown restaurants came to check out our produce at our last event. One chef cleaned out a grower's entire supply of radishes.

The Chef Shack, a popular fixture at the Mill City and Kingfield Farmers Markets, will make their Uptown Market debut on Sunday. NYC culinary pros Carrie Summer and Lisa Carlson will feature their grilled natural Fire Chicken ('So hot! you'll lose your sense of humor!' ) as their gourmet food fare centerpiece. Expect crowds 10-20 heads deep... their street eats are that good. Read a City Pages article on The Chef Shack to catch up on the food frenzy.

Other new Uptown Market vendors:

Drive By Bags (Gail and Jeff Greengard): Bags made out of recycled vinyl billboards.

Go Green Beans: an electric powered Zap Truck custom built into a mobile espresso cart. It is a cool "green" spectacle complete with a solar panel on the roof. They sell organic fair trade coffee drinks and teas too. They have a relationship with Peace Coffee, and serve their beans.

David Witt: a poster artist well known in the gig poster scene but new to the market scene.

Two other things you can also look forward to this weekend: Tomatos and dogs.

The August 16th event will not only be at the heart of the tomato season, but unlike other farmer's markets, dogs are totally welcome!

The Uptown Market will take place August 16th and September 20th; 11:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., rain or shine. 29th Street between Lyndale Ave S. and Dupont Ave. S in Uptown.

The Uptown Market promotes the selling of goods from local artisans, craftspeople, food vendors and area farmers. The market is a project of the Calhoun Area Residents Action Group with additional sponsorship from the Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association. Organizers will still offer same-day registration to eligible non-food vendors on the 16th. The final Uptown Market of the season is scheduled for Sunday, September 20th.
