Boston-based amateur photographers invited to enter MAPC contest

The photography contest themes are: sustainability, equity, community and prosperity in the Greater Boston region. If you're a local photographer and have work that relates to these themes, you have the chance to win a $100 gift certificate!

The first annual photo contest sponsored by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council will accept entries now through May 20, 11:59 p.m.

The contest is sponsored by MAPC as part of the "Friends of MetroFuture" program. "MetroFuture" is the regional plan for making a greater Boston region, focused on enhancing the quality of life for people who live and work here. Contest entries should depict the photographer's vision of better places to live, work, play and build community. For a map of the Greater Boston region, visit www.mapc.org/subregions .

Winners will be selected by a panel of four judges, including National Geographic Magazine Photographer Brian Skerry. Other judges include Nathan Fried-Lipski, a Boston-based professional photographer with extensive freelance experience shooting general news, public events and culture; Marilyn Contreas of the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD); and Grace S. Shepard, Treasurer of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council.

Judging will be based on creativity (25 percent), quality of photography (25 percent), and theme conveyance (50 percent).

Up to four entries - one in each category - may be entered in the contest. There will be one winner per category, as well as one Grand Prize winner. Each category winner receives a $100 gift certificate to a local photography store; the Grand Prize winner receives an additional $100 gift certificate.

Entries should be e-mailed as JPEG files to Kathleen O'Connor Ives at kives@mapc.org.

Winning photographs, as well as finalists, will be displayed online at www.mapc.org  and www.metrofuture.org  and in the MAPC newsletter, The Regional Record. The contest is open to any non-professional photographer. For more information, visit www.metrofuture.org .
