College students hold protest at public hearing on tuition tax

Local college students held a protest today at Mayor Ravenstahl's public hearing on his proposed tuition tax for students attending colleges and universities in Pittsburgh.

The public hearing was part of the weekly City Council meeting.  The proposed 1% tax would be used to fund city services provided to the campuses located within the city limits.   The tax would cost a Carnegie Mellon Student over $350 per year and a Community College student would pay about $27 per year.

The Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education released a statement from the heads of the local universities that read, "We will continue to oppose this proposed tax as unfair to our students, who already pay many taxes to the City for services they and others receive. Our legal counsel advises us that the tax is illegal and unenforceable."

The 2010 budget has already been rejected by the Oversight Board because of this proposed tax.  The City is required by law to pass a budget by December 31, 2009.
