A break from Christmas music

Do not let Black Friday, uptight relatives, or the guilt of consumerism ruin the electricity of the holiday season. Christmas is more than family time and exchanging gifts. It’s also your last chance to go out and tie one on before your one-month resolution takes effect. There’s plenty to do and see to help take the edge off, or maybe finally help you get that edge.

If it is your family gatherings that are making you intense and you feel as if you want to tackle the nearest snowman and rip its stupid carrot nose out of its head, and you can’t wait to see Megadeth and Slayer at Roy Wilkins Auditorium on February 4th, maybe the Sick Puppies playing at First Avenue on December 10th will suffice. If you do look forward to spending time with your relatives, but think they need to unclench a little, bring them to the 331 club in Northeast for the Minneapolis Grown-up Spelling Bee on December 19th at 7pm. Maybe what your family needs is some good old burlesque. The Fine Line Music Café is presenting the Jameson Bartender’s Ball on December 14th. Although, maybe the burlesque show should be saved for a night out with your partner. It’s sure to get you in the mood and help you forget about Christmas for a couple hours.

If your cool cousins are coming to town and you need to impress them with your association to the hip scene in Minneapolis, check out Western Fifth (www.westernfifth.com) at Lee’s Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis on December 22nd. Another option is Mason Jennings; he’s playing First Avenue on December 19th, or Doomtree at First Avenue on December 5th.

If you’re looking for family activities, the Cedar Cultural Center has a family air guitar jam and rock concert for kids on December 12th.

Enjoy your family this Christmas. It’s okay to get out of the house to enjoy a little music with your dorky cousin who teaches high school art or the brother-in-law who needs to expand his music tastes outside of light rock just a little. They may have been cool once, but now their idea of cool is getting the latest fashion at Kohl’s.
