American Seniors Association vs. AARP: Seniors have a choice

AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster

Amidst recent controversy over what is perceived as support by AARP for Obama's health care reform-- a new player has emerged on the scene and they are ready to serve disgruntled seniors. According to the American Seniors Association website, ASA is "looking out for seniors by fighting a health care reform bill that will cost upward of $1.8 trillion over the next 10 years and cuts in Medicare of $500 billion."

The Atlanta-based American Seniors Association describes itself as a conservative grassroots advocacy organization whose mission is to "provide seniors with the choices, information, and services they need to live healthier, wealthier lives." Additionally, in direct reference to the current health care debate, ASA has specified that it "wants seniors to live longer, more fulfilling years of life-- not an 'end of life' continuum that this bill suggests."

And just to show they mean business, ASA has posted the following offer on their website:

"The American Seniors Association (ASA) invites any American Association of Retired Persons member to mail us your torn AARP card and receive a 2 year- for- 1 year membership with ASA."

Over the past few weeks, AARP's position on current health care reform proposals have been conflicted, in the very least. On August 11th, President Obama, in a nationally televised town hall meeting on health care claimed the support of AARP for his health care plan, only to be followed by an immediate press release from AARP stating they had no official position of support for current health care reform.

Tom Nelson, AARP's chief operating officer, said, "Indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate.'"

However, as Miami City Buzz Examiner demonstrated in a recent post entitled, Health Care Reform Bill: Is AARP sending a confusing message to seniors?, the information presented on AARP's website included enough statements and clarifications which hardly could be interpreted as a lack of support from AARP.

Apparently, the controversy over health care and AARP's position has caused quite a few seniors to declare that they have had enough. According to a report relesded today by The Associated Press:

"About 60,000 senior citizens have quit AARP since July 1 due to the group's support for a health care overhaul, a spokesman for the organization said Monday.

The membership loss suggests dissatisfaction on the part of AARP members at a time when many senior citizens are concerned about proposed cuts to Medicare providers to help pay for making health care available for all. But spokesman Drew Nannis said it wasn't unusual for the powerful, 40 million-strong senior citizens' lobby to shed members in droves when it's advocating on a controversial issue... The approximately 60,000 number represents members who specifically cited AARP's stance on the health overhaul debate in canceling their membership between July 1 and mid-August, Nannis said."

American Seniors Association has pronounced Florida as having one of the largest senior populations of any state in the nation and senior citizens as being "the most important voting bloc in the state". Representing hundreds of thousands of seniors nationwide, the American Seniors Association is making it possible for those seniors with dissenting voices to now be heard.

I am Office Manager of medical clinic and am senior. I never joined AARP because they are not doctor/patient friendly and when they solicited me a couple of years ago I told them this. Is there any discount for us that until now did not know there was an alternative to AARP and did not join because of their agenda?

WOW! Thank you so much for the info. We never joined AARP and never would. They are a totally left-wing organization. This group sounds exactly like what we want. It's great that so many seniors have cancelled their memberships in AARP. I think that a lot of Americans are realizing that this "change" that they voted for is not such a good thing. We shall be calling and joining ASA tomorrow. Thanks again Robbin. We always find your
    articles very interesting.

This is wonderful. I'm canceling AARP and joining ASA. I want choice. From the first day I heard AARP was supporting the government run option I wrote them to dismay my disappointment. Then they had a meeting were the AARP rep just shut it down because she was upset that people were speaking to loudly! AARP is to left leaning for me. They had no problem keeping their distance with this government run health care disaster which means they are not looking out for seniors. Obama said AARP was on board because he knows which way they will lean no matter what happens. That is not looking out for us. They are apparently more interested in power and money. It's bad enough that our representative in congress don't listen to what we want anymore, but I'm certainly not going to pay an organization not to listen to me either.

Nice to know there is an alternative with ASA...Will check them out. Note for Carol Caldarella: Money alone is not evil. It is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil. We have a government which has two things in mind: 1. Advancing an ideology and, 2. Control of each person. Simple as that and they will use whatever means is available to reach those goals. The health system is just one major attempt.

AARP has a history of bad judgement and selling out to the highest bidder. We live in Florida and quit AARP last year after they ran several articles in their magazines about how bad life was here in Florida and how good it was in Arizona, Nevada and Texas. We have a good life here and felt that local Chambers of Commerce were influencing AARP.

Man up and refuse to use socialized security; Medicaid; and Medicare. You use, you lose. Live off all the savings you were obviously smart enough to save and leave these socialized programs for the commies. Take a look at your social security statement showing the tiny amount of money you’ve put into it and perform a conscience check on just how good you feel about taking ten times more out than you put in. Anyone using socialized security is adding to the mortgage paid by our children and great; great grandchildren. Just like most ultra conservative hyperventilating wing nuts. Ring - no answer.

Many people are leaving AARP because the monthly premium continues to rise, not becuase they are protesting the AARP support to President Obama. Secondly, everyone is complaining about "socialized medicine" yet they know nothing about it. Look at our Soldiers who use government hospitals and clinics. These are established, government-run facilities where Soldiers and their families get free health care. Is this socialized medicine??? The Soldiers don't complain - IT'S FREE!!!! So, get over it and stop complaining! President Obama is trying to fix what the greedy doctors and other medical professions/lobbyist have created which is a nightmare and unrealistic health care costs. I did't see any of you out there complaining and raising your voice when President Bush was spending billions of dollars overseas on another country and we were/are getting NOTHING out of it!!! Do your research.

I cancel my membership after confirmation that A.A.R.P CEO Barry Rand donated our membership money in the amount of $9000.00 to Obama's campaign. A.A.R.P said they initially supported Obama's Health Care Bill. Even Obama said A.A.R.P supported his Health Care Bill, some one is lying? Than A.A.R.P. said, no we do not support Obama's H.C.B. What do you expect A.A.R.P.to say, after all more than 40,000 of their members have cancel there membership. A.A.R.P has gotten to big for there pants, just like our present government.

I and all my friends who were AARP members for years have cancelled our memberships. While we chose to look away from their
extreme left-wing politics over the years because we felt that we benefitted from the group, we are no longer willing to ignore all that is going on now. It's just too much and too important.
Anyone who thinks socialized medicine is a good idea needs to take a really good look at all the other countries that have it.
Do YOU want someone deciding for YOU when it's time to die? Obama and all his czar's are doing everything they can to make this country more like COMMUNIST Russia everyday. And we know how successful that country is. Don't we? Stand up and fight back America!

I had AARP for a few years, I got car insurance through The Hartford which is connected with AARP. It was fine for a couple of years and then suddenly they doubled my rates for no reason. Went to Geico and dumped AARP. That little tiny discount on hotel rooms when my wife and I travel just isn't worth looking the other way any more. If they support Obama or anyone else that hates America as much as he does I just don't have time or money for them!!

AARP has become the far left, Now it has become just a high priced insurance co. The American Greed. All seniors are not democrats and not the far left liberals. They want us to become their slaves and this is what this new administration is attempting. AARP also helped to elect this social administration. I just dropped AARP because they charged me three times the amount as Geico, for auto insurance. I did not register my auto and they will not refund my down payment. Al Duhan N M CT.

I am a 20 year member of AARP. They will not get another year of dues from me. Since they have chosen to throw Seniors under the bus, it will delight me to throw their membership card down the toilet and tell them to get their noses out of "the annointed ones" posterior. I plan on checking out American Seniors Assoc. I do not appreciate anyone or organization that takes it upon themselves to trample my constitutional rights.
