Although we are all watching the state of the economy from our various vantage points, we are all hoping and praying that we see some sort of real recovery. Not the kind on Wall Street in stocks and bonds and trades that mean nothing to our dinner tables. But the kind where the unemployed can work again and the displaced can put their homes back together.
Those of us who are currently employed dread each day because it might be the day that it ends for us too. And those who are already unemployed dread each day on the hunt for jobs that just aren't out there.
Four Seasons Town Center hosted the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce 2010 Job Expo and Franchise Fair on Wednesday 9/1 in Greensboro. More than one thousand people attended looking for jobs. There were more than 50 local organizations in attendance hoping to fill internal openings. Probably by job fair standards this would look promising but unfortunately it further exemplifies the issue that fewer jobs are available and the number of unemployed continues to grow.
Many of the positions that are being sourced today are lower paying, entry level positions. While a lot of the unemployed have sometimes decades of experience in their fields of expertise. It can be severely disheartening to continue on this cycle of searching, applying, interviewing and ultimately remaining unemployed.
The good thing is that there are jobs available. Consider:
- a job in another field where you have more interest than experience
- working toward advancing your transferable skills with training (computer, phone, hands-on, knowledge)
- starting your own small business (find a niche and seek out the help you need)
- volunteer (churches, schools, hospitals always need an extra hand or two)
If you aren't working it doesn't mean that you have nothing to contribute. Stay busy. Job Fairs are great opportunities to meet people and network. Use every bit to your advantage.
