The most common push present to show the appreciation beyond just receipt of that squalling bundle of milk, smiles and full diapers is *drum roll* JEWELRY.
Baby.com suggested in July that today's top push gifts are as follows:
1) Jewelry - from stackable single-birthstone bands and earrings to lockets on bracelets, dogtags engraved with the baby's name and dad's initial, and customized thumbprint pendants.
2) A vacation - some experts suggest this is the time for the new family threesome to get away, citing that young infants sleep much of the time anyway. Also, specific resorts offer sitters or activities for infants as young as six months.
3) A rocking chair that can become a family heirloom.
4) Printed calling cards with the mom's contact info; this is especially handy for playdates and all the other appointments new moms will make.
5) A flat-screen TV, or similar family entertainment option. Especially handy for all those sleepless nights new parents may be walking the floor.
Primarily a device of wealthier new parents, the push present is often a reflection of that financial stability. New fathers have been known to purchase or even commission objets of art, even custom-lighting them as household centerpieces. Hot tubs, spa days, commemmorative medals and designer diaper bags are further examples of expensive and trendy gifts.
The jewelry is often deluxe, too, as well as symbolic. Nesting pendants in gold evoke mother and child imaging, kisses and hugs come in the form of "x's" and "o's," and precious stones - even in the old birthstone stand-by format - are set in every metal possible, including 14K and platinum.
Among the first jewelry store registeries for push presents was New York's Fortunoff in 2007. Today, more businesses offer the service, and numerous websites share ideas for more choices and imaginative gifts.
Whatever the gift, the feelings and love behind it are key. From experts who psycho-analyze the need for a new mom to feel pampered - and even glamorous - to the new moms who appreciate even the gift of a few extra naps in their daily routine, push presents are going to continue to grow.
