Former S.C. governor gives $1,000 to Benjamin's mayoral campaign

Former Gov. Jim Hodges is apparently among Columbia mayoral candidate Steve Benjamin's contributors, according to third quarter contribution documents.

He gave $1,000 to the attorney's mayoral campaign, which raised more than $102,000 during the latest fundraising period, according to figures from the State Ethics Commission.

The former Democratic governor appointed Benjamin as the director of the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services in 1999.

In comparison, Columbia City Councilman Kirkman Finlay raised more than $6,000 in contributions for his mayoral campaign. His largest contribution was a $2,000 donation from Attorney Leighton Lord and his wife, Caroline.

Finlay also raised nearly $30,000 for his city council campaign.

See the complete list of donations for both candidates, as well as their expenses for the third quarter, here on The State's Web site.
