Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department bolsters ranks with new recruits

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –A new class of 44 New Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers joined the ranks of the police department on Friday.

These men and women will provide the department with a much-needed boost in manpower.

In a morning ceremony the new recruits, which included men and women, part of the department's 161st recruiting class received their badges and were sworn in.

Among them were former marine and class president, Scottie Carson who said, “I hope to give back to the community, that sense of security and safety much like I did in the US Marine Corp.”

Carson exemplifies the spirit of this particular class of recruits. His years of service already make him a valuable asset to the police force.

Jen Henderson of Charlotte said “I feel safer knowing new police will be coming onboard the department”.

CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe commented on Friday: “these are among the best and brightest recruits we ever had. They will make a fine addition to our department…”

“CMPD is nationally recognized as one of the best police departments in the nation”, according to the Charlotte peace activist newsletter, which just completed a series of three stories on the department.

“Their reputation stands for itself”, said Ron Good, associate editor of the alternative press newsletter which has some 200 subscribers. “Even among minority and under privileged members of the community CMPD is an organization that is highly respected”, he said.

“My son is thinking of joining the police force,” said Mary Alice Henshaw. “He is working hard to complete his last year in High School so he can join the force...”
