Former Massachusetts Turnpike Authority chairman Matthew Amorello was arrested at 2:15 a.m. Saturday on River Street in Haverhill.
The Associated Press reports that the embattled public figure had hit several parked cars and then kept on driving until police caught up with him.
He was alone at the time.
Amorello was arrested without incident and was bailled out later on in the morning.
He will be arraigned in Haverhill District Court Monday morning on charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of property damage.
Amorello quit his job with the Turnpike Authority in 2006 not long after 12 tons of concrete fell from the roof of a tunnel in the Big Dig project, killing a Boston woman.
He resigned after weeks of pressure from then Governor Mitt Romney.
