After a weekend of rumors about a deal being reached, the Cincinnati Bengals officially signed unrestricted free agent offensive guard Bobbie Williams to a two-year contract on Monday. While the details of the contract have yet to be released, the important factor is Williams will return for his seventh season with Cincinnati as the Bengals finally reached an agreement with their top priority in free agency.
The Bengals entered the 2010 offseason knowing their top priority was to sign Williams—who played a key part in the improvement of the offensive line last season. After ranking 30th in 2008, Cincinnati bounced back with the ninth overall in 2009 and now has the potential to be just as effective—if not better—next season with a healthy Andre Smith returning.
Smith fell nothing short of a disappointment during his rookie campaign after fracturing his foot during training camp that effected his first season with Cincinnati. Now that Williams has been resigned, there’s every reason to believe the Bengals will contain a top-five offensive line in 2010 if Smith can live up to all the hype.
Williams has started 93 of 96 regular season games during his six-year tender with the Bengals along with two playoff games. He signed with Cincinnati in 2004 after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles.
