Five favorite cigars of 2010

As I prepare to attend the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers (IPCPR) trade show in New Orleans next week, it brought to mind my favorite cigars of 2010. Here are five fantastic options in no particular order:

  1. Guillermo Leon by La Aurora*
  2. La Aurora Serie 107 Aniversario Corona
  3. La Palina Limited Edition 1896 Robusto
  4. Nestor Miranda Art Deco*
  5. Nestor Miranda Collection Dominicano Lancero

*I smoked these pre-release cigars recently at a Washington, DC dinner hosted by W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist in honor of Guillermo Leon of La Aurora Cigars and Nestor Miranda of Miami Cigar & Company. As pre-release cigars no size is given since available sizes may vary once the cigars are released to stores in the coming weeks (No artwork of the two pre-release cigars was available at the time of this article).

As you can see Nestor Miranda appears twice. He's had an excellent year with his namesake lines and the Dominicano in particular made me a fan of lanceros. The La Palina, at $19 per cigar, is pricey compared to the others on this list. However, it is certainly worth buying a box for long term storage (Remember: most brick and mortar tobacconists offer box discounts, making the per cigar cost lower). I crave the Cubanesque La Palina Cigar, it's that good to me.

The La Aurora 107 was a revelation. I've smoked many La Aurora products over the years, but the 107 was a great departure from the norm.  Leon's 107 with great grass and spice notes, has earned a place in my regular rotation. The new Guillermo Leon by La Aurora is nuanced and showcases that a diversity of flavors can indeed work together.  Lastly, the Nestor Miranda Art Deco continues Miranda's trend of flavorful, complex cigars. When you see it at your local shop, consider it (I need a much bigger humidor, folks).

If you haven't already done so, give these cigars a try. Visit the recommendations tab for a list of DC tobacconists near you.
