Upper Cut by Punch - cigar review

Wrapper: Ecuadoran SumatraUpper Cut by Punch cigar band

Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan (Esteli), Nicaraguan (Ometepe)

Binder: Nicaraguan

Country: Honduras

Factory: American Tabaco S. A., Honduras

An offspring of the Punch “Election” promotion, the blend created for Upper Cut by Punch is the direct result of a national taste test. Ometepe (pronounced oh—meh—TEH—pay) is an island formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua in the Republic of Nicaragua. Its name derives from the Nahuatl words ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), meaning two mountains. Nestor Plasencia is the only company growing tobacco in this area. General Cigar is the sole purchaser of this tobacco.

Upper Cut by Punch cigar photoThe Upper Cut by Punch comes in three sizes:

  • Toro - Length: 6.62; Ring Gauge: 54
  • Grand Corona - Length: 6; Ring Gauge: 45
  • Robusto - Length: 5.25; Ring Gauge: 50

Looking at my samples, the wrapper is a good looking, medium brown color with some darker striations. It’s very smooth with only a few fine veins. The cigar is firm to the touch with no discernable soft spots. The wrapper gave off a rich, leathery tobacco aroma and the foot had a raisin/fig aroma.

I clipped the cap on the Upper Cut and found a firm draw on the pre-light. The raisin/fig flavor comes through pretty well at this time.

The cigar lit easily, and gave off some good smoke volume. There was a mild to medium pepper sensation on exhale along with smooth, creamy smoke.

One of the samples I smoked had a bit of an ammonia aroma while smoking. There was a general room aroma of hay coming off a few of the other samples.

For the most part, the flavor profile of the Upper Cut is leather, tobacco and a slight fruit flavor with some coffee coming in on the last third.

The cigar dropped its first ash after the first inch had been smoked. Smoke time was about one hour for the robusto vitola.

The Upper Cut by Punch is a medium strength, full bodied cigar that is certainly much different than what Punch is offering in its other blends. I would put this blend right up there with my other favorite Punch blend, the Rare Corojo.
