What a bird sees on Sunday

On any given Sunday, in the glaring sunlight of Fort Worth, Texas, you’ll find, on one short, city block, three to four churches architecturally closed in, socially insulated and . . . relevant? By insulated, I mean, church buildings are sometimes literally within feet of each other and one group of church-goers will not even greet another group. This is a bird's-eye snapshot.  In many communities across the nation, the relevancy of the Christian Church is not a question because the plain and simple answer is, no, it is not relevant. Churches, generally, have responded to this irrelevance by submerging themselves in community services to the poor, the addicted and the marginally educated.

However, the question of relevancy continues to be a tug-of-war for the children and grandchildren of over-age-forty, die-hard Christians. As young people grow to become socially and politically vocal in the church, they are asking if the religion of the church liberates and empowers them. Is it part of their destiny? In efforts to remove this uncertainty and solidify long-term membership, churches have organized a chic menu of religious entertainment that would rival any club, concert, conference retreat or amusement park. Aggressive marketing campaigns consist of motion picture promotions that advertise youth services focused on indiscreet sexuality and modified secular music all surrounding pastors’ ramped up personal styles. Yes, even in good, old Texas.

Notably, this response to youth, upwardly mobile young adults and metropolitan folks, who have “alternative” appetites, has ideally culminated in the rise of much-acclaimed “mega” churches. Some of which have fled to Texas – the beating heart of the Bible-belt – with whirlwind relocations that have vacuumed starry-eyed Christians, including teenagers, out of smaller congregations into the daze of Christian fame. Though these transfers of membership have been called “growth” by industrial-size churches, the presence of celebrity preachers and two worldwide Christian television networks in the Dallas/Fort Worth area has not resulted in the much anticipated “spiritual revival” that every Christian expects to come to his/her community before the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Church attendees pray to God for old-fashioned revival but come to church to implement the programs of a modernized, sociable faith that cannot be held accountable to the old-fashioned Bible. Church auditoriums have become television production sets; and what was once the purveyor of the principles of Jesus Christ has become either ritualistically cripplingly or a new age craft of absolution and guiltless amusements. Unfortunately, DFW churches have trends like these to spare. For the most part the Bible no longer anchors their purpose. Instead, these organizations follow the personal, spiritualist inclinations of up and coming generations that may put their wallet where their craving is.

Recently, I passed by a church in Mansfield whose marketing icon was not a cross or a dove or a flame swirling around a cross, not anything Christian or religious; but there was the name of the church emblazoned next to a large, comfortable red chair. I suppose the image was an invitation to come in, relax . . . be yourself (even if yourself was not or never would be Christian). These are fine for seekers who are looking for such “upwardly mobile” Christ-based, rather than Christ-like, venues.

Those who are searching for orthodox Christianity must look a little more closely, though, to find, strangely enough, the trend within a trend in Texas. It is a small vein of churches that have managed to maintain their relevancy without revising the Bible or upgrading their Christianity. A few are purposed to change and revolutionize the majority church trend in DFW. It is a loose knit network with many local orthodox churches being strengthened by national, denominational ties instead of local fellowships. Whether these will go the way of so many others remains to be seen. For anyone in north Texas looking for a church-church, however, these may be the last hope and choices are few and far between. The quest can only be compared to encountering libraries that no longer have books – digital or otherwise.
