EU President Herman Van Rompuy
Yesterday and today, there were two items that different people paid attention to.
One was for the first time, the new post-Lisbon Treaty European Union selected a president. He is Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy.
The second was the Oprah Winfrey announced that she would discontinue her long-running television show in September 2011.
While the first item may have been on the televised news last night, this examiner did not see it. Instead, he did see Oprah's announcement on multiple channels.
What about print media?
This morning, the front page of the San Luis Obispo paper, The Tribune, had the Oprah announcement. But nowhere was this examiner able to find any reference to the new EU President. If it was anywhere in the paper, let's just say that it certainly was not prominent.
Herman Van Rompuy is now the president of a supranational state of 500,000,000 people. This state not only has more people than the U.S.A., it has a larger total economy.
From a human interest perspective, apparently more Americans are interested in learning about Oprah Winfrey than certain international events. From an end time prophecy perspective, however, Herman Van Rompuy is more interesting.
The Bible foretells a time when an end time power that descended somehow from the old Roman Empire will rise up. The European Union certainly seems to be getting itself into position to fulfill this prophecy. The European Union is forming and will be some type of foundation for the fulfillment of a militarized “Beast power” that is warned about in Revelation 13. The final rise of a Babylonian system is warned about in Chapters 17 and 18 as well. The appointment of new leaders for Europe is an important development.
The Bible says that this final European power will be somewhat religious. And while so many consider that Europe is irreligious, consider that the new European Union President is Catholic and graduated from a Catholic university. And while there is nothing out-of-the-ordinary about that, notice one report about what Herman Van Rompuy's comments five years ago and why he is being supported now:
“Turkey is not a part of Europe and will never be part of Europe. An expansion of the EU to include Turkey cannot be considered as just another expansion as in the past,” he said.
“The universal values which are in force in Europe, and which are fundamental values of Christianity, will loose vigour with the entry of a large Islamic country such as Turkey.”
Filip Dewinter, a Vlaams Belang leader, said: “We are entirely in agreement with Van Rompuy over this question and are convinced he will defend this point of view as President of the EU. So, religion apparently played a role in the support of Herman Van Rompuy. And there may be deepening divide between the EU and Islam. This does not mean that there will not be cooperation of any kind between Europe and Muslim nations, only that the leadership of the EU is letting the world know that religion will likely be something that separates the EU from others.
The reality is that with his selection, the European Union is starting to signal to the world that religious values will be one area that will distinguish the European Union from others.
But because most Americans heard more about Oprah in the last day or so than about Herman Van Rompuy, they simply do not realize how events are aligning with end time prophecies.
