One of the most incredible holidays in America is Thanksgiving. What a blessing to be surrounded with family, friends, food, a home, and television. And after that, it’s Christmas shopping for many. One company in particular is offering a unique opportunity to those who are looking for a way to keep Christ in their shopping: Trade as One Christian company.
According to The Christian Post, Trade as One was founded by Nathan and Catherine George. The couple have taken capitalism and given it a Christian slant. Burdened to help God’s people in developing nations, this couple has a vision to be a beacon of hope and escape for children, youth and even adults who suffer in extreme poverty and the degrading industry of prostitution. The article states that, “During their trips to India, Malawi and Zambia, the husband-wife team saw how businesses allowed people who would otherwise make $1/day actually make a living wage.” In addition, “The Georges asked how they could help communities and the response was nearly always, ‘We need a route to market in America,’ and ‘We need you to tell our story.’”
Here’s where Christmas shopping with a purpose comes in: purchases made at the Trade as One website will give those who were trapped in abuse and oppression dignified work that ends the cycle of dependency and frees them from that abuse. Trade as One has an online shop with handmade craft and gift items that tell the story of each person who has made the item. Some gift ideas include handmade cards, Christmas ornaments, sports equipment such as soccer balls, toys, olive oil, scarves, wallets, jewelry, silk handbags, purses, and more. Prices seem to range from $5 - $60. According to Just One’s website, just one purchase, “from every churchgoer in America would lift 1 million families out of poverty for a whole year.” And it’s an idea that can work with as few as 5 in a living room or as many as a church of 15,000.
