There is a lot of controversy right now over homosexuals in the military, gay marriage, teaching children in school that homosexuality is normal behavior, etc.. At the root of this issue is the question of whether or not it is a choice, or if a person can be born gay / homosexual.
In the book "If you read just one book this year ... " the author, who goes by the pen-name "An American Man," addresses this issue in chapter 8 which is simply entitled "Homosexuality." The author starts out with a humorous approach toward the forcing of homosexuality on those who happen to find it distasteful by comparing homosexuals to vegetables. Then, interestingly enough, he says:
"Now, as far as homosexuals go, even though I can't stand the way some of them behave, I do feel sorry for others because I've heard stories about the difficulties they have faced ... every person is different, and every life story is different ... we need to figure out how to live together, and help one another, without abusing one another."
He proceeds to address hate crimes and how television media plays a role.
"Many people in the media seem to forget that intelligent consumers want to understand both sides, and want to get to the heart of the matter. I want to know and understand WHY people are gay, don't you? Not just "who is" and "who isn't" and how wonderful they think it is to come out of the closet. What made them gay in the first place? Isn't this a significant part of their story? their struggle? ... Even if you don't like or didn't expect the answers you receive, shouldn't the TRUTH actually BE important?"
American Man then discusses how we are "losing out because of manipulative, selfish agendas that do not have our best interest at heart" because there is "no genetic proof that anyone is born gay. However, does that mean that people are NOT born gay? No. .... just like stem cell research, and evolution, and the education system, there are individuals who are determined to continue down a path that leads away from the answers and the solutions we need."
"This is why we need dialog. This is why we need more time before coming to hard and fast conclusions. And is this one more reason why no one should be silenced or put in jail for being gay, or not gay, or anti-gay ..."
The author points out that "Many people have come in and out of the lifestyle. Straight people "go gay" - like Lindsay Lohan. Gay people "go straight" - like Stephen Bennett and Dennis Jernigan. Some people go "go gay" and then back to straight again - like Anne Heche."
So if it's not a genetic thing, then what is it?
"Part of it is cultural sexual lust ... it is like a fad or a virus. Some people are more susceptible than others. And once infected ..."
What other reason(s) could there be?
"Nevertheless, I truly believe the root of the problem is something that few people understand or believe in because they have never taken the time to explore the possibilities or the solution. I would like to point out that we have a nation of fathers who are, to say the least, irresponsible. Because of their irresponsibility, their lack of love, their neglect, their perversion, the family unit has crumbled ... because where the head goes, the body follows."
"Men, who are supposed to be the spiritual leaders of our society ... they are absent, distant ... some are filled with unhealthy desires for power and position, job promotion, objects and possessions. They are unthankful, unholy, and proud .... Men, this should be a wake-up call ... the sins of the fathers are passed down through the generations."
This is Biblical, and should give us all something to think about.
"Mothers, sisters, daughters - listen up! Choose your men wisely. Don't be in a hurry to have sex ... (or) have children ... protect your children's innocence ... sometimes it's those closest who fondle, molest, expose ..."

You inquired as to the reasons for homosexuality, whereupon you quoted an author. You will forgive me, but are you inferring that American paternal irresponsibility is the reason for homosexuality? I am not sure what you are saying. That is how it reads. If so, then it is a fallacy of false cause.
And genetics? How does using a socio-cultural line of reasoning, such as the sexual wishy-washiness of celebrities, refute the claim that homosexuality is genetic? I am not claiming that it is genetic, but I see cause to point it out. Genetics is a biological discipline, not sociological. Genetics do, however, influence the behavior of humans. This is well documented.
I would not go as far as to say that our genetics make our daily choices for us, but they do influence them.
And, to be fair, not all Christians agree with James Hartline and his methods.
This so-called "concerned Christian" that just commented is an imposter. He/she is not really a "concerned" Christian. whoever this person is, is trying to use the label of Christianity as a means of convincing others that Christians are embracing homosexuality. There is nothing for you to be "concerned" about in this article, if in fact you really are a Christian because the underlying message here is that, basically, homosexuality is wrong. Period, end of story. Like adultery and fornication, etc.
Imposter? I see. I find it interesting that you use the same type of fallacious logic as the author of the book to "prove" that I am not a Christian. What does my eternal security have to do with the fact that I pointed out a reasonable flaw in someone's argument? Is that how it is in your church? If someone questions a claim, statement or line of reasoning, then they are not really Christians? Seems somewhat convenient.
Why do I point this out?
Well, because this one, single issue has become such a consuming force; such a call to arms, that people have begun to replace the cause of Christ with the cause of self-righteousness. And do you really believe that the issues of adultery and fornication are treated with the same severity within the church as homosexuality? What would be worse to you? To find out that your child had premarital sex or to find out they were gay? Or what about shoplifting? Does God make such comparisons?
Homosexuality has a biological basis. Studies done a few universities have shown that the more sons a woman has, the more likely the next one is to be gay, due to her body successively building up antibodies to male proteins. But it doesn't matter if its genetic or biological though - even if it is a choice, it is none of your business because it doesn't hurt you. Don't like gays? Don't be one. Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one.
It doesn't matter what the "root" of the "problem" is. Just accept that some people are, and want to be different. The way to live happily together without abusing each other is to accept other people's choices, especially if they don't harm you.
Although I disagree with you, I really like the stance you take of trying to change things through awareness and dialogue, rather than threat of force (laws, bills, legislation, Prop 8).
Bologna pony (who is full of baloney) writes:" homosexuality is wrong. "
And you know that how? Obscure passages from a bronze age cultural narrative? Of course, you don't pick the vast majority of the rules in that narrative. You undoubtedly eat port, shellfish and a few hundred other things outlawed in that primitive document.
"Period, end of story."
Its so refreshing to have someone so sure of themselves for no good reason.
" Like adultery and fornication,etc."
Adultery can be problematic because people get hurt, but it may be unavoidable. Fornication? Will be with us forever.. thank goodness.
