Herschel Walker is back in the news for his recent victory as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. This former NFL football player and Olympic athlete is showing once again that he has what it takes to make it in the world of sports, despite the fact that he has had to overcome a serious mental health disorder called Dissociative Identity Disorder.
From Herschel's website: "Dissociative identity disorder (DID), which has been known as multiple personality disorder, is the most famous of the dissociative disorders. An individual suffering from DID has more than one distinct identity or personality state that surfaces in the individual on a recurring basis. This disorder is also marked by differences in memory which vary with the individual's "alters," or other personalities."
Herschel Walker knew he had a problem with anger that was contrary to his normal nature. There was a time he was so upset with one man that he thought to kill him, to shoot him in the head, and the enjoyment it would bring. Herschel prayed for help and God showed him the way.
In his book Breaking Free - My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder, Herschel writes: "As a born-again Christian, I believe God actively and directly influences me to action. I asked that He help stop me from what I was about to do. "Lord, Jesus, I do not want to kill this man. Please, dear God, somehow show me what it is that I should do." "
His story is one that other people may be able to relate to, and he hopes to share it with as many people as possible.
Herschel's personal website is dedicated to helping others so they can receive assistance with depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative disorders, suicidal tendencies, and substance abuse.
So now when Herschel is not busy showing men 20 years his junior that he is still an athlete to contend with, he makes himself available for speaking engagements. Topics include:
"There's no shame in admitting you have a problem, I did",
"I'm not Sybil", "How can horse manure be a good thing", "Being bullied", and "Building a legacy."
Herschel Walker is based out of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and encourages people to call AscendHealth Corporation toll free at 1-866-441-4440 for a no-charge assessment.
