A new dragon, varanus lirungensis was discovered in Indonesia. The little fellow was discovered on the Talaud Islands, a small Indonesian archipelago.
The new species is carnivorous similar to all other monitor lizards and he is is closely related to the giant Komodo dragon and the crocodile monitor.
Researchers weren't even looking for him as they were there to study another species of monitor, the Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator).
Missing link or natural selection (rearranging or making use of genes that were already there in the first place)?
The latter, no doubt,
Researchers warn, “As monitor lizards are exploited for the international trade in live animals and reptile leather, small island populations could soon be eliminated.”
Where's the fire come out? *smile*

New to who??? Am I to innerstand that it took researchers from half way around the world to come to the Talaud Islands, Indonesia during the past few months to discover what the indigenous people of this "(small)" island who tread there for the past several thousand years had not??? I THINK not.
Don't you love it how they use the word DRAGON to give interest to just another lizard that probably should have gone extinct. Boring.
When you find a lizard that can spit fire as well as fly, please feel free to post.
