Byrd and Melanie Billings, parents of 16 kids found shot dead. Why bad things happen to good people

Byrd and Melanie Billings

Safe at home, surrounded by their 16 kids, 12 of whom were adopted, is what Byrd and Melanie Billings may have been thinking.

They were wrong.

While their children, many with disabilities and troubled backgrounds were at home, ( from infant to about 11 years old) their home was invaded and mom and dad were shot dead. Police found them in their bedroom.

So, where can a person feel safe? If not at home surrounded by those they love and those who love them, then where?

The Bible makes no guarantee of our physical safety just because we believe in Jesus. The Bible also doesn't answer the question of why bad things happen to good people.

Jeremiah the prophet does ask the question why do good things happen to bad people? See Jeremiah 12.

God's answer starts off a bit obscure - "If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?"

In other words, God has bigger plans for his people than making everything appear to be fair right now. In the end, God will be fair and justice will be fair. (v14ff) What He desires is that we trust Him even when we don't understand.

He has big plans for us. Let us be faithful and trusting in our daily lives so that we can indeed compete against horses. When good happens to bad people, we'll be patient. When bad happens to good folk we will trust.
