Doritos Super Bowl commercial video with little boy slapping his black single mom's date causes consternation

One of Doritos' Super Bowl commercials was of a black man apparently picking up an African-American single mother of a young son for a date.
He brings her flowers.
He checks out her pretty legs in a little miniskirt.
He gets slapped by her son.
But this reporter's small focus group at home had problems with the way the Doritos commercial portrayed the "hot black single mom" -- chiefly in a way that might not have been portrayed if she wasn't black.
I don't know. Personally, I found the little protective boy kinda cute -- of course, in real life, that little joker wouldn't slap a grown man like that. But in Super Bowl commercial TV land, it was funny.

doritos marketing team: now how can we connect with the blacks??? hmmm lets do something with a single mom in a mini skirt
and a hypersexualized guy with dreads! racist.
No she got it wrong! The issue is a kid being protective of his mother. Regardless of race, it's funny because it does happen! Some morons are truly reading more into it than present. Grow the hell up and quit trying to make race an issue where there isn't one!
Best one yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michelle-Marie.....why do you have to say "racist"??? It's not Doritos marketing, it was a contest with 6 finalists and that was one of them voted in.
Nice try, but you will have to put the blame someplace else. Try not to play the "race" every time you ignorant idiot.
Sure it's a foul commercial, but as a black man - that slap was still FUNNNY. LOL HAHA. kEEP YOU HANDS off my DORITOS!
Get your panties out of a wad. It was funny regardless of color. Why did you have to point out color. For you to even make mention of a difference in skin color is wrong. You are racist, not Doritos.
I'm a black man and I thought it was funny people need to lighten up it was one of the funniest commercials on.LMAO!!!!!
FUNNY, FUNNY,FUNNY!!!! LMAO!!!!
Offensive. Not funny
I don't see the point mentioning race. It was a woman, man and a child. To my surprise I went on line to see the commercial again and I see the word "Black". When is the race thing going to stop. "Most" people see people! Humor is humor.
this commercial was way too funny i love it,,who care what color it was the bomb
The best one of the whole night!
Black, white who gives a !!!! it was probably made in China anyway; I that this was the best commercial of the whole night. Good job Doritos.
Anybody who thinks this was racial or any other way in a bad way is dumb. This was straight up funny and the best commercial for the super bowl
This is the best commericial I've seen in years. It rivals Mean Joe Green's commericial. There is a spark of truth that makes this funny. Have you ever seen a small child step up to the plate protecting a parent? YES. It is taken a step further to include the doritos. Its funny. If you think otherwise you must have a face full of Botox.
it would have been funny if a white guy would have been slapped...there are inter=racial relationships
it was perfect. a single black mom (75% of black kids with no live-in fathers) who wags her tail/tale. a black guy salivating over an easy poa. a little kid whose role is to protect mom and already knows how violence operates. let's move to the future with mom at 400 lbs, the kid in gaol, and the suitor not supporting another 30 kids. ahhh. a perfect ad.
Michelle-Marie said it best!
Beyond Offensive!! Keep in mind nothing in marketing is by accident.
I was with a diverse group and everyone thought it was one of the best commercials of the evening. (E-trade also!) There were black men/women and white men/women - single and married - no one took offense. Seriously, lighten up!
Michelle-Marie has got it exactly right. This negative portrayal of black women as a single mothers is not by accident. Its a reflection of the negative stereotype that Doritos and its marketing team has of the black family in general and black men and women in particular. It is also a reflection of how they think we view ourselves. Let's be clear, if the subject of the commercial were a white single mom, she would be portrayed as white trash--a type of person that "they" would not want portrayed in a favorable light in order to discourage their daughters from becoming like this. Think about it.
As a Black Man raised by a single mother myself there were times I wish I could have slapped the crap out of my Mom's date. There are just things you DON'T do. The "Guy" coming into the home as if he's running things now just cause he has a date. It doesn't work that way. DON'T touch my food (Doritos) or my Momma unless your intentions are sincere. The "Guy" came into the house with the wrong attitude so the kid checked him. Some times the truth hurts but in this case the ad was spot on and funny as hell. I know because I've been there, minus the slap. Ohh what I'd give to slap the s!@# out of one of her dates like that. :D
Michelle-Marie,you obviously are HYPOSEXUALIZED! Try the 2 D's Dic and Doritios,it's a good combonation. If you happen to be black, you should be glad to see a young man step up for his mother, instead of on her!
mlk- u most have gotten beaten up as a child y would u be upset that a child can care enough and love his mom enough to protect her. was your mom 400 pounds cause she didnt want to share the dorritos1!!!!!!! lmao
I love this commercial and mlk-> you are so negative and retarded(: that's all(:
That commercial was a Hooot! I'm black, and found no offense in it at all! What's wrong? This woman couldn't look sexy for a date because she's black? Or is it that any black woman that looks great and proudly dresses to show it, is automatically supposed to portray "Street Walker?" Stop dissecting, relax, and enjoy!
I know kids in my class that would do that if someone came to take their mom out and also touched their snack. Laugh til I fell on the floor.
How is this a Christin article?
Funny. No more, no less. As Larry The Cable Guys says " I don't care who you are, that's funny."
Simply funny, not everything has to be seen through a racial prism. The little boy's reaction to the date was universial.
Why is there always someone "offended" If a charactor happens to be black. Maybe the guy who made the commercial was black. Get freaking over it!!!!! It was a cute spot and no one in there right mind would take it seriously as a deliberate racial stereotype. So lets change it to white or hispanic actors next time so we can all laugh without the drama.
Why don't you articulate your problem with the ad? What do you think "might" have been different if the female in the ad wasn't black? Why?
Can people just stop with the stupid color stuff its a commercial whether she was white or black she was sexy and the commercial was funny. This is the kind of stuff that keep racism brewing. STOP THE COLR SH--.
I enjoyed the commmecial but for you to put little black boy as your topic is crazy, just say a little boy slaps his single mothers date. Enough with the stereotyping aready please.....
gosh dang amazing
I can't stop watching your video. Not only is this the best commercial I've seen in a long time, it's absolutely very funny and entertaining! Doritos you rock!!!!! and your chips are the best!
I loved that commerical and have been watching it every since . we have to realize it's a commerical!!!! the creator maybe black and felt like doing that many times as a child...with an opportunity to show his/her feelings to the world!!! laugh at it,love it, and let it go!! It was the best commerical of the evening.
Michael L & Michelle-Marie are once again playing the "Race Card". No "Race Card" here!!!! The director of this commercial (Joelle De Jesus) is BLACK!!!! People voted for the commercial and Doritos aired the 3 finalists during the Super Bowl. If a black guy says a "black" joke it's funny to you but if white guy says it, it's racial. I'm sure he had no intention of using black actors to stereotype the black race. You want stereotype....watch the movie Precious (directed by a black guy). I don't hear anybody crying FOUL about that....but if a white guy directed it...LOOK OUT!!!!
good grief people. lighten the hell up~ it's cute and funny, and black is black is wonderful so really...
This Kid wasn't gonna let any one disrespect His house......I thought this was funny. There is nothing funny about disrespectful children, but you must admit it was pretty disrespectful the way this man looked at his mother as well as went into the little man's chips..............
Hilarious...and I'm Black.
I agree with Richie. Watch the movie Precious. It had every stereotype of the black race imaginable.....Single mom, abusive father, teen pregnancy, uneducated, unemployed, lazy, welfare, milking the system, ghetto, stealing, fried chicken, AIDS....the only thing missing was the watermelon. It's a riveting story because it's true. The only reason there is no backlash is because it was directed by a "brother". If it was directed by a white dude (true story or not) it would be offensive and racial.
If that's the truth....am I lying????
I'm black - I thought it was hilarious. Hire some white actors and do the same skit, I'll still laugh.
Get a grip! it's only a dang commercial!

How is the male actor "black" but his date is "African American?" The journalist, here is only half PC.
And to all of you who think it's "just funny" and there are no bad messages, what if the black man had slapped him back and said (holding up two fingers) 1) "don't ever slap an adult" 2) "and don't forget those are your mom's Doritos, she bought them, and she would be fine with me eating them, since I am about to take her out for a $50 dinner."
It was freakin cute...calm down people...! it jus shows that hes lookin out for his mother...!
I don't think the little boy should have slapped the mother's date. That sends the wrong message to our kids. Kids should be kids no matter what. Why was the word "black" used to describe the mother? We can all see that she is a black woman. In all of the white commercials -- there is no description of race. Had she been "white" -- I am quite sure she would not have been described as a white single mother!! The commercial could have been a lot better had the little boy not slap the date. Personally, I did think it was cute -- I just had mixed feelings on the slap.
I'm black and usually sensitive to these things but that commercial was by far the funniest commercial I've seen in a long time. I burst in laugher every time I see it. It's hilarious. "Put it back. Don't touch my mama and don't touch my doritos" Funny!
This is really funny! Now for ya'll "black on!" folks with low self esteem, the negative social problem would be if he hit the kid back. Otherwise, I died laughing!
