Previously I have written how we avoid the idea of responsibility and accountability by creating all kinds of reasons why we do the things we do. We don't understand consequences because we have mesmerized ourselves with empty explanations intended to divert blame to our parents, our environment, our government, anything but ourselves. That is why the idea of a strict moral code, right and wrong, and inevitably the idea of sin is so deplorable.
Why do we think being a free moral agent does not come with moral responsibility? If you want to step in front of a speeding 18 wheeler you will suffer the consequences whether you want to or not. All the psychological reasons why you stepped in front of that truck don't change the fact that you will be very dead. Is it the truck's fault? Why do we blame God for the injustice in the world? Why do expect to have it both ways?
We are free moral agents. God said choose and we choose. What we have not figured out yet is that because we are all free moral agents and because we are all in this together we all pay the consequences for what each other does.
Surely you understand that if you step in front of a truck before you have had the opportunity to be a parent it is highly unlikely your would-be children will contribute anything to humanity, this great community of which we are all a part. Duhhhh! Your future unborn children will pay the consequences for your insanity. It hardly seems fair does it? Is abortion fair? What cures went to the grave with that unborn child?
The Bible tells us that God does not hold us accountable for the sins of our ancestors or those around us, but the consequences, hey, we all have free will. Inevitably the community suffers when what is best for me trumps what is best for you.
This applies to the global community, think economy for instance, as well as to marriage. The husband is supposed to be willing to die for his wife. What will the wife's attitude toward her husband be when he treats her as God intended? For many marriage partners, unhappy their expectations have not been met, theirs is a wrestling match to see who will throw who in front of that 18 wheeler.
I know socialism is not the answer. Face it, we are all better off that none of us are God. How can we be free moral agents even in an ideal socialistic community when you still have someone deciding what is best for someone else? We all know where there is no accountability there is injustice. Accountability! Arghhhhh. We have come full circle.
How can we be accountable to one another if we are not accountable to God? How can we love one another, how can we be willing to die for one another if God was not willing to die for us first?
Around and around we go. Ultimately all of the injustice in this world is a derivative of our telling God we can handle it; we don't need God, there is no God. Right, and there is no 18 wheeler with a trailer full of the consequences of our actions either.
So we push those who don't think and talk and believe like us in front of that 18 wheeler and think things will get better, but have they? Will they?
Year s ago I saw a cartoon of a little soldier standing in an empty world of destruction. Everything and everyone was destroyed except him. The caption said, "I won?"
I have to agree with my son Ryan, "Come quickly Jesus. Come quickly."
