Two of our sons called and one came over on Easter. Many say Easter is all about family. Some say it is pastel colors, Easter egg hunts, candy, and Easter baskets. I've been told it is the most important Christian holiday, more important than Christmas.
Passover was the Monday before. Jesus celebrated Passover. I wonder why we don't celebrate the feasts we read about in the Bible? I'm sure the theological reasons are legion, but still, I wonder.
Google Easter. Treat yourself to more than three or four sources. I like to read and hear both sides of a discussion. I suppose that is why I have conservative as well as liberal friends. I like to stretch, ponder and consider, but ultimately I trust in Scripture. When it comes to Scripture I wonder why we pass over Passover for gentle pastel colors and candy.
One of my sons described his rare experience at church. He has a gentle spirit, but he's kind of an Easter only church goer. When he does go to church he often sees what most of us overlook because we've grown accustomed to it, like disrespectful children; the same ones you see in the grocery store, Fred Meyers, Target. He asks me, "Doesn't the Bible say to train up a child in the way they should go?"
He was surprised to hear a young man saying curse words in the hall.
He liked what the pastor had to say, but wondered why the folks, so docile in the pews, were so aggressive in the parking lot. He said the whole experience reminded him of Disneyland. Sometimes his gentle observations are wounding.
I suppose his reaction is appropriate when you consider that most folks think of Easter as baskets, candy and don't forget the rabbits and little chicks. This is the day the church considers so holy?
I asked a Jewish man what he thought of Easter. He said Paganism. You know, I think my one son might agree. So we talk about the last supper, what Christ did for you and me and yep, Passover.
