
Health care vendor - El Rio Community Health Center
The Coalition of African American Health and Wellness held its People of Color Festival on Saturday, September 12th, 2009 at the Dunbar Center in Tucson, Arizona.
The People of Color Festival is part of the national “Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day” and Arizona Healthy People 2010 in support of efforts to reduce disparities in health within the African American community.
The event, in its fourth year, provides health screenings, health and safety exhibits, health care vendors, food, entertainment, activities for kids and door prizes.
The coalition presents the annual Harriet Tubman Vanguard Awards to individuals and organizations that have shown outstanding support for the community’s health and wellness.
This year’s award winners were:
• Community Health Activist: Gezzele Martin, R.N., C.P.R.P.
• Community Health Educator: Francisco Garcia, M.D.
• Community Health Provider: Sharon E. Lister, D.D.S.
• Community Health Volunteer: Joslyn Winters
• Community Organization: El Rio Community Health Center
• Faith-Based Organization: Southside Presbyterian Church
• Health Policy Advocate: Karin Uhlich, Tucson City Council, Ward III
The keynote speaker was Colette Marie Sims, Ph.D. who spoke on, “Optimal Health and Wellbeing is Your Birthright – But You Must Be Your Own Best Health Advocate.” In the presentation, Sims gave ten guidelines you should know about when evaluating online medical resources and information.
