An Unfinished Life - a movie review

Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, and Morgan Freeman

I loved the movie An Unfinished Life starring Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and Jennifer Lopez.  The movie is based on the book by Mark Spragg.

Einar Gilkson is a tough-skinned, retired rancher who long ago turned his back on painful memories.

Still in shock from his only son’s death a decade ago, Einar has let his ranch fall into ruin along with his marriage. Now Einar spends his days caring for his hired-hand (and long-trusted friend) Mitch, who has been gravely injured in an encounter with a bear.

Einar intends to live out his days in this heartbroken solitude until the very person he blames for his son’s accident comes to town. Jean, his daughter-in-law, shows up broke, on the run, and with a girl named “Griff” who Jean swears is the granddaughter Einar never knew.

I love this movie because I love metaphors. The bear in the cage is the metaphor for all the characters involved.

Every person is in their own psychological cage -- Jean because she feels responsible for the car accident which killed her husband. Mitch, stuck in his cage of pain, and Einar because he can’t forgive and because his drinking caused his wife to leave. Even the young “Griff” is caged; fearful of men because abusive men she was witnessed her mom dating.

The one answer that brings freedom for everyone is honesty.

I think you'll enjoy this movie.  The movie was filmed in Canada so the scenery is gorgeous, and most people will see bits of themselves in all the characters.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Thanks for the recomendation, I don't remember hearing about this movie, but after watching the trailor, it's going on my Netflix list!! I just love Morgan Freeman, it looks very touching-a reminder we don't always choose the way life turns out but we always have the choice on how we handle it.
