Got two friends? Give each a copy of Melanie Wells’ newest release, My Soul to Keep, and help teach someone to read.

It’s all part of her “I Told Two Friends” campaign. Melanie is donating 100% of her profits from this book to fight illiteracy. Her goal is to raise $100,000 by the end of 2009. Why? Her reasons may surprise you.

“Why not? I already don’t have the money, so I won’t miss it!”

When My Soul to Keep released and Melanie decided to do some kind of fundraiser with a portion of the proceeds, her research revealed that almost no one does this. Her search for the right cause led to illiteracy. “It’s one of the few things in the world you can actually change, and the ripple effects are enormous.”

Melanie notes that 774 million people worldwide are illiterate, most of them women. 10% of the United States population is functionally illiterate, and 62% of the prison population is illiterate. “And we are the richest country in the world! Illiteracy is associated with just about every evil under the sun. Child abuse, family violence, violence against women, poverty, hunger, HIV/AIDS. By teaching someone to read, you can affect all these social ills and make a genuine difference in the world.”

My Soul to Keep, published by Colorado Springs publisher Waterbrook/Multnomah, is the third book in the Day of Evil series. Melanie is currently at work on the fourth book in the series. “I’m creeping myself out writing it, so I know it will be a good one!” Will she do another fundraiser? Possibly. “I like giving money away.”

Get involved by purchasing two copies of My Soul to Keep and giving them to two friends, then ask those two friends to do the same. Follow the campaign on Twitter (itoldtwofriends), or check it out at www.itoldtwofriends.com. Funds go to Proliteracy.

Fantastic idea. Now, after you buy the two copies, make sure you give them to two people who need to learn to read...and teach them. That way the book gets more attention AND more people learn to read.
