Terrorist attack in Texas

Within the last few hours at least one shooter and as many as three men shot and killed as many as a dozen soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas. Another thirty one have been injured. The FBI came out early and said it was not a terrorist attack. But when a dozen soldiers are killed at their base by men seeking to harm them and many others, what would you call it, a tea party?

We do not know the motivation for the attacks yet and details are sketchy. The shooter Major Malik Nadal Hasan has been killed and two other men are reportedly in custody. Regardless of who is responsible for this attack or why, does it have to come from Al Qaeda to be considered a terrorist attack? Was Oklahoma City a terrorist attack? Was the DC sniper a terrorist?

We must remember it wasn’t long ago that another base shooting occurred and the radical Muslim terrorist who carried out that attack was not revealed in the main stream media as a radical terrorist.

"a tea party?" Do you really think it's a joking matter? Can you please keep your irresponsible rants that you call journalism to yourself? you're not helping.

whoops...sorry...I see that you write on behalf of the Conservate Christian Right; should've ignored your bullshit from the get go. And since you don't seem to know it, terrorism is a tactic of warfare...not a person who carries out an action. Try to do a bit more...oh i don't know...research before you post your crap.

I appreciate this article, and completely agree. As a military wife and Republican, I am sick of seeing this crap go on in our military. This was an act of terrorism on our military. Hearing the alleged shooter's name is NO surprise...Time to get all Muslims out of our military, and out of our country!!!

He's not a journalist. He's an examiner, therefore he examines (checks out, studies and considers).

I believe he mentioned a tea party because it sounds like something that you, Mr. Anonymous, would call it.

Larry Amon, thank you sir. For the responsible truth.

    The definition of terrorism:
    (for those ignorant)

premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant (1) targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.

    From Princeton:
the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians

    Good research doctor anonymous.

How is this clearly terrorism? Because his names sounds Islamic? We know hardly anything at this point. We don't know his motivations. Terrorism is an attack with the intent to terrorize. We do NOT know if that was his intent. He may have been deranged or looking for suicide by soldier. Your jumping to conclusions is shameful.

If it looks like terrorism, sounds like terrorism, and the guys name is "Hasan" then it's terrorism, and that would make him a terrorist.

I'm so sick of all these idiots out there defending psychos like Hasan. They care more about people calling him a terrorist than about what the victims' families are going through right now---shameful liberals

No surprise. If this isn't terrorism, than what is? The guy infiltrated the military. Certainly better screening is needed and hopefully will be put into place. All Muslim applicants need to be carefully scrutinized. Profiling saves lives. If it would have been in place on 9/11 3000 people that were killed might have been alive today.

The guy actually wasn't a Muslim convert. The shooter's cousin appeared on FOX News (Shep Smith broadcast) and said the guy has always been a Muslim.

um... do you think the columbine shooting was a terrorist attack? isnt it prety much the same thing except in a more public location? a couple of people go around with guns with the intension of harming people and they ended up killing and injuring quite a number of people. that is pretty much what hapened there and that is what happened here. that said if the the incodent today met the cryteria of a "terrorist attack" then so should the collumbine shooting, and so should most other school shootings. And also I wouldn't call it a tea party I would simply call it a shooting. and no terrorist attacks dont have to come from alkada, and not all shootings that have planing behind them make them terrorist attacks. I think you are too sucked in by the american propoganda and are blowing this WAY out of proportion. Yes, today was sad, but I think your jumping to the most horible solution was just plain stupid.

If this was suicide by cop the guy could have pointed a gun at a cop and then died. What he did was terrorize the men and woman he shot at and their families. Does it really matter if he left a note saying he did it because of Mohammed or because he was nuts? Also, one guy can’t easily shoot 40 people, there is probably more to this. It looks like he had help. This is simply more than a shooting. I don't believe this is an isolated incident with everything else we have seen. I can understand if some don't think it qualifies as terrorism but I think it does. It could be a coincidence that this guy was a Muslim, but there has been a pattern emerging with radical Islam and this looks suspicious.

terrorist? what about the guy who shot 5 of his fellow soldiers in iraq base back in may? is he considered a terrorist too? probably not because he doesn't have a muslim name.

  • Jake 2 years ago

Yeah, that guy back in May was just like those who flew the planes into the WTC towers. Similar name, religion and so on.

And we all know that it is Buddhists, Christians, Taoists and Bahai that attacked us on 9/11, blew up the Khobar towers, planted bombs in the WTC in 1993, bombed the U.S.S. Cole and on and on.

And we all know that it is Buddhists, Christians, Taoists, and Bahai that are responsible for the 1,000+ jihadist attacks around the world in the past 20 years.

and, all of you liberals, think there wasn't any terror today in that building when 40 people were shot by a man named Hasen. You want to give a definition of the word terror, got some news for you Jack the definition of Terror gets re-written everyday, like today! I will give no apology for being as Christain as I say God Bless and comfort all at Ft Hood. One more thing my friend, why are you so quick to make fun of a Christian and protect the Islam religion. I find that strange.

This was an unforgiveable massacre, and I hope justice prevails as Mr Hasan and his cohorts are prosecutted to the full extend of the law.

That said, I'm not sure about the word "terrorism" in this case. First: I was always told that terrorism involved attacks on civilians, while this was a military base. Second: we don't yet know these mens' motivations. Third: an Arabic-sounding name is not a qualifier for terrorism, as many commenters seem to imply. After all, we remove our shoes at the airport these days thanks to a man named "Richard Reed."

Regardless, my thoughts are with servicemembers at Fort Hood and their families. The name of the act does not change the tragedy of it.
