Joseph Anfuso, a twin "in search of himself," came from a family of wealth, prestige and high-expectations. Son of an influential United States Congressman opened doors for him to meet diplomats, presidents and elites of the financial world. But, that privilege carried a price—a distant father with little time to nurture his children.
Graduating from Rutgers University placed Anfuso among advantaged young adults like himself. However, that too fed his disillusionment with the values and pressures of a family and world that offered little sense of meaning. It would take multiple experiences abroad and as many years for Anfuso to learn that true spirituality comes from One Source and that Source created him for a purpose.
After traveling abroad to London, then to Nepal and India, he learned about Eastern philosophies and religions but found few answers. However, Anfuso saw and experienced much that conflicted with his own identity and culture, from seeing young girls catching fresh cow dung to make fuel patties for cooking, to reading by lantern light, and meeting holy men.
He also met other travelers who found spiritual meaning in the Eastern cultures that taught freedom from anything required discipline." Yet self-discipline seemed a novel and distant concept when viewed from Anfuso's upbringing of wealth and privilege. Even so, he worked diligently to learn new customs and pay his own way while he questioned the cultures he lived among.
After two years, with his visa running out, Anfuso returned home, disappointed because he had the same questions he'd left with still feeling self-absorbed, empty and alone. He couldn't know how his family had changed in his absence or know that what he had searched the world for waited for him at home. Anfuso's story of "privilege turned into purpose, "carries a message that could change your life" if you let it.
