Becky Campbell, founder of The Brownie Brittle Company
Becky Campbell was baking one holiday season when she decided to modify her brownie recipe using peppermint extract. Something went wrong and the brownies Becky intended to make were crunchy and flat. Actually, they were brittle. Rather than toss the pan of crunchy goodness, Becky developed a company and today she is the owner of The Brownie Brittle Company. Now that is capitalizing on a mistake!
Becky may have made a mistake in her holiday brownie recipe, but she made no mistakes when she decided to turn her brownie brittle into a profitable company. As a resident of Virginia, Becky knew the importance of obtaining the trademark symbol of Virginia’s Finest for her new product. Established under the Virginia Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services, the Virginia’s Finest Trademark Program promotes the development of Virginia agriculture and specialty food products. The program highlights Virginia produced products and is a highly regarded marketing vehicle in Virginia. To obtain the coveted Virginia’s Finest checkmark, a product must be deemed the best of the best! Quality control may give prospective Brownie Brittle customers a sense of security as to the quality of the products used to produce this delicious confection, but your taste buds are all you need to know Becky did the right thing by not tossing out her “mistake”!
In just two years, Becky’s company has expanded the selections of brownie brittle from her original flavor of “Choco-lot” into over 25 flavors within 4 collections. Her classic collection features such delicious options as Caramel Craze, Mmmmint and Peanut Butter Bliss. The Island Collection features Pina Colada, Mojito and Pineapple Pizzazz. The Après Collection offers Amaretto and Buttered Rum while the Citrus Collection will give dessert lovers the option to choose Oh So Orange and Key Lime flavors. Whatever your taste, Becky has developed a brittle flavor to please you!
No need to travel to Virginia to taste Becky’s delicious creations, just log on to her website and order these treats at $5.50 per bag! Virginia is not just for lovers…it’s for brownie brittle lovers! Enjoy!

Hi Terri,
This choccolate-centric story is fantastic. I'm from Spark, an SF-based youth empowerment program; we offer middle-school students apprenticeships in their dream jobs, and we've recently had a huge influx of kids asking to be bakers. We currently have a San Francisco student working with Recchiuti Chocolates, amongst several of our other pastry and cake apprenticeships.
I'd love to speak with you more about our findings -- please e-mail me at banat@sparkprogram.org ASAP. Thanks so much!
