Supporters Superclasico

Union Ultras (top) and Angel City Brigade (bottom)

The LA Derby known as the "Superclasico" has produced a number of memories for the fans of both teams.  Whether it was Jesse Marsch kicking David Beckham from behind on national TV, or Alan Gordon's last second tying goal in 2008, the fans have been there through it all.

In soccer, it's common knowledge that Supporters groups of opposite teams always clash.  Whether it's verbally or physically, it's just the way it has always been.  However, despite what has sadly become the norm between groups (or "firms" as our friends across the pond would say) the Goats' Union Ultras, and the Galaxy's Angel City Brigade decided to buck the trend.  Regardless of the the heated rivalry between the clubs they support, they were going to do something different.  For the first time ever, in an attempt to extend the hand of friendship, both groups scheduled an exhibition for August 29th, just hours prior to the Superclasico later in the day.

No expense was too much for this event.  Practice field 5 was reserved at the Home Depot Center.  Union Ultras and Angel City Brigade members practiced day in and day out to prepare.  Food was purchased along with beverages for spectators and participants alike.  Replica team jerseys and a Supporters Superclasico Trophy have also been commissioned for the event.

"We basically decided to use open dialog and open access between the groups to avoid the misunderstandings that lead to violence", said Union Ultras member "Gameface.  "We understand that the growth of supporters groups in MLS would be destroyed by violence. These groups (Ultras and Brigade) practice what they preach".

With less than two days to go before the 2:30pm kickoff on Saturday, Home Depot Center management decided to cancel the match.  Per an undisclosed source, this was preventive measure to avoid problems between the groups.  Ironically enough, the same reason why this match was arranged in the first place.

"There's been no incidents between the involved groups." said JediK though bigsoccer.com.
"Both groups have been taking this friendly seriously and practicing for it for a while now. All the planning, preparations, practicing, money, and effort put into making this happen has just been thrown out the window".

This match was a way to show that despite differences, everyone can get along.  A great opportunity to show the rest of the league how rivalries could still be friendly, out the window indeed.
