Ten all time favorite cartoon characters: Fred Flintstone

I yabba-dabba doo is the famous line from The Flintstones.   Frederick Joseph “Fred” Flintstone is the main character in the 1960’s animated series The Flintstones set in the modern stone age city of Bedrock. Fred worked in a rock quarry and was an accident waiting to happen and he also had a mean temper. The smallest thing would set him off. But, the thing about Fred is that even though he angered easily, he is a very lovable guy that adores his wife, Wilma and his daughter, Pebbles. Fred also has a best friend and neighbor (Barney Rubble) and they do guy things together like attending fraternity meetings at the “Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes.”

Bedrock is a modern day stone aged city with the conveniences of the mid-20th century. They used animals like the woolly mammoth, dinosaur, saber-toothed tiger, and the like for technology. For example, the baby woolly mammoth was used as the vacuum cleaner, the trunk of the adult woolly mammoth was used as the shower, and birds were used as car horns. However, what most people remember most is how they drove cars that were powered using their own feet.

The Flintstones will celebrate 50 years on the air in 2010.
