The first ever animated TV series about Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat will enter the PBS Kids programming schedule in Fall 2010. Based on the beginning reader books from Random House's The Cat in the Hat Learning Library series, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! will teach young viewers about the natural world during the course of exciting adventures that The Cat in the Hat and his companions have.

Voiced by Martin Short, the Cat will spend each episode traveling from place to place in the Thinga-ma-jigger, a funny vehicle that can adapt to any environment by producing wings or wheels or even shrinking in size. He will be accompanied by six-year-old Nick and Sally and his wild comrades in mayhem from The Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two.

PBS KIDS focusing on teaching scientific content

Adding The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! to their line-up further strengthens PBS KIDS' recent focus on teaching math and science concepts through shows like Curious George or Jim Henson's Sid the Science Kid and (coming in September 2009) Dinosaur Train.

According to PBS KIDS, during the 40 half-hour episodes that will make up the first season of this new animated preschool series, the characters will "journey down to the bottom of the sea to observe the giant sea worms, zip over to the rain forest to find out how many animals make their home in the great Kapok tree, or shrink down to the size of a bee to visit a hive and discover how honey is made."

Learning specific facts and information about these various life science topics is great, but what is even better is that the show plans to teach scientific literacy, or the thinking skills kids need to ask and answer questions during a scientifically based exploration of the world.

Upcoming Cat in the Hat Web site, books

When the show launches, PBS KIDS will also launch a new Cat in the Hat Web site full of activities for kids and resources for parents and teachers.

And, in addition to the The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library books already in print (like Oh Say Can You Seed? All About Flowering Plants by Bonnie Worth and On Beyond Bugs: All About Insects by Tish Rabe), Random House will be publishing a new line of original books once the show starts airing.

I won't let my kids watch another episode (we've seen the pilot just today) simply BECAUSE of the interracial preaching. I think people should respect their heritage. If you were a dog and you married an elephant you'd soon have no more elephants OR dogs. That's not right. I'm a proud black man and my heritage is true. I intend to teach my children that they should keep their race sacred.
