Designer engages on-the-go kids with a suitcase full of fun activities

Today's kids are always on-the-move. Now, they can keep track of their adventures (from a family trip to the soccer practice carpool) with the i-get-around line of products created by Twin Cities designer Deb Miner. What does it take to bring a new toy to market? Find out in this exclusive Examiner.com Q&A!

Q: Describe i-get-around and where the idea came from.

A: i-get-around is collection of books and fun "activity encouragement" products for kids who get around in everyday life, on special trips, and in their imaginations. Curiosity, discovery, and learning are encouraged by Rover, a loveable, adventurous (and kinda silly) hound who likes to get around and learn along the way. Rover inspires little ones (age 0-8) to be creative and connected with the world around them—including being active in the outdoors and nature (i-get-around is a natural fit for helping to get kids outside and to be more physically active). Rover bikes, skis, skates, dances, walks, talks, runs, jumps, swims, and more. But we're not preachy—our focus is on participating in life and having fun! There are so many ways kids are influenced to be passive observers or process things only mentally—so we take a different approach. We like to celebrate the natural “doing and being” energy kids have to explore and learn through active play, sensory experiences, and self-expression. Current "activity encouragement" items include a board book, a sturdy journal, 6 themed sticker sets (the adhesive is non-permanent, so no worries about where kids stick them), and a tot-sized suitcase.

The idea for i-get-around came from a desire to help kids connect with themselves and others—physically, emotionally, and creatively. I’ve loved going places (both real and imaginary) since I was a little girl. My brother and I explored the woods and creatures in our backyard (in Iowa), boated on the Mississippi, and rode in the backseat on lots of roadtrips. My mom had lots of wanderlust, and my dad was endlessly curious about how things worked or were put together. This taught me that “getting around”— exploring, noticing, and learning new things—was (and is) exciting! I loved to draw and "create things", and I enjoy encouraging kids (and their adults) to explore and enjoy the world around them.

Q: What was the most challenging part of developing a new kids' product?

A: Even though there are plenty of challenges in developing a new kid's product, the most challenging part for me has been spreading the word and getting sales and distribution. Honestly, I don't enjoy asking people to buy my stuff, but I love when they recognize the benefits, discover how much kids like it, and buy it for those reasons!

Q: What has been most rewarding about creating i-get-around?

A: Responses from kids and their parents, grandparents, caregivers, friends, aunts, uncles, and teachers!

Q: What's your advice to others who have new toy and game ideas? How should they proceed?

A: Proceed slowly and learn as much as you can! It takes a lot of patience and commitment to stick with it. I'm self-employed, and the majority of my income still comes from my other business: debminer designer LLC

Q: Where did the character for i-get-around come from?

A: A "rover" is, by definition, one who “gets around” right? And since I wanted to create a friend who can engage imaginations, I chose to make Rover a combination of kid, dog, and imaginary friend. So he has an open-hearted, enthusiastic, and innocent spirit (with a good measure of playful silliness). Don't we all need buddies like that?

Q: Where is i-get-around available in the Twin Cities?

A: That keeps changing! Currently, the best selection is at some great independent stores, including: i like you (NE Mpls), Local D'Lish (North Loop/downtown Mpls), and Nokomis Shoes. Some items may still be available at Creative Kidstuff, Kiddywampus, and CoraZon, but I recommend calling first to check. Also, check out Split Rock Lighthouse Museum Store on the North Shore, and Jake's on St Croix in Stillwater. We love supporting local stores, so we welcome inquiries. You can also always order online at our website:i-get-around.com

Q: What does the future hold for i-get-around?

A: Exciting news! We are doing a Spring Tour of kindergartens and preschools. We're also seeking partner companies to create additional books and fun items with with. For more information and to get updates on new developments and special offers, become a fan of the i-get-around Facebook page, and be sure to subscribe to our email list.
