If you are reading this article online, watching TV out of the corner of your eye and answering text messages between paragraphs, you are not alone. In fact, the word “simultaneous” best describes American’s media participation behavior. As this year comes to an end, predictions are that this trend will continue and in fact, increase with the creation of new technology.
Nielsen.com published its predictions for the top media trends in 2010 today.
1. American consumers will be able to purchase Internet-enabled TVs.
2. More TV content will appear online.
3. Mobile phones will be able to access longer video content.
4. 4G networks will make it possible to have access to the Internet anywhere in the world.
5. Media networks will struggle to engage viewers due to increasing variety.
6. Low-cost productions, like the Jay Leno show, will increase.
7. Low-performing networks will go under.
8. Free on demand online offers will be reconsidered.
9. There will be more new program outlets.
10. More distribution channels will be added.
These results may not come as a surprise. Demands on mass medium accessibility are high and media manufactures are listening. Other contributing factors may be the economy and media mergers.
