Ready for Spring Break 2009!
Thanks to bleak economic times, not many families will have the time or money to go on a big vacation this Spring Break. Times are rough and money is tight, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still go on a few special adventures with the kids. Whether you want to spend the day, or only have a few hours, there is a quite a variety of local attractions here in the Valley.
1. A Trip to the Zoo
The Phoenix Zoo is a great place to check out some pretty cool animals and munch on some really good kettle corn! Right now the zoo is featuring Sting Ray Bay, an interactive experience that allows guests to touch some amazing ocean animals. Your kids will squeal with delight when they get to feel the slimy ocean critters!
2. An afternoon at the Museum
Arizona Museum for Youth is the perfect creative outlet for all those little creative minds. The museum is set up of two different sections catering to both tots and school aged children. Artville, designed for children from birth to 4 years, features many hands on activities as well as enclosed play areas and dress up rooms. For school aged children check out the Way to Glow! Scott McNeill Exhibition. This exhibit features some really cool glow in the dark art that all kids will appreciate. After all, what could be cooler than looking at art in the dark?
3. Yehaw! Ride them Ostriches!
The Chandler Ostrich Festival is a great way to spend the day with your family.
Located at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler, there is truly something for everyone here.
Open March 13th-15th go and experience great food, games, a petting zoo and best
of all, the Ostrich races! This festival even has a kid zone loaded with toys, bounces, activities and animals. With our wacky Arizona weather, you never know when it will be hot, so make sure to bring lots of water and wear comfortable walking shoes!
4. Train rides and icees
Freestone Park in Gilbert, offers a great mini train ride. The train park will be open daily the week of Spring Break. This little train ride lasts about 10 minutes and only costs a few bucks. After the train ride you can zip on over to the concession stand and grab a nice, refreshing icee. In addition to the train ride, Freestone Park has a mini carousel and tons of ducks that are always looking for a good snack!

Cabela's in Glendale is also a nice outing for little kids. I took my grandchildren, ages 4 and 2 1/2 there last week, and it was just enough for their short attention spans.
They have a walk-thru fresh water aquarium, with a variety of fish and turtles, a wildlife exhibit with a faux canyon to walk thru. Then you get on the escalator and you can look at the exhibit from up high.
Older kids (unless they havre a special interest in wildlife) would be bored, but our little girls loved it!
