Making your own window clings can be an easy and very creative craft project. It is also a fun way to get in the Olympic spirit for the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Finding Olympic window clings are usually pretty hard other than the ones VISA and the United States Olympic Committee sometimes give out. Making your own can be a fun craft and the ease of it also makes it kid friendly. it can be a messy craft, as it involves paint, but the paint comes off pretty easy when wiped off right away.
Supplies Needed:
- Cookie Sheet
- Dimensional Fabric Paint in a variety of colors (Tip: Scribbles seems to be the cheapest in the small sizes at least at Joann's on Oracle in Tucson, but the Tulip brand 4 ounce bottles are overall cheaper and can also be easily to hold and use, especially for young kids. Just be sure to carefully read the Tulip bottles, as the Sparkles variety sometimes looks a lot like the Slick style, but create very different results.)
- Wax Paper
- Templates of the designs you want to make (see links below for some Olympic themed ones, but you can also trace or draw your own)
- Tape (optional, but extremely helpful)
1. Prepare your templates and place them on the cookie sheet. You might want to tape them in place.
2. Cover the templates with a piece of wax paper. Taping the wax paper in place is also optional, but it is highly recommended to help keep it in place over the templates, especially to keep from frustrating kids.
3. Trace the designs you have chosen with the dimensional fabric paint.
4. Let the paint dry overnight. (Normally letting them dry outside would be a good idea to make it dry faster in Tucson, but not with the forecast of rain most of the week)
5. Once dry slowly peel them off the wax paper. If you have long fingernails, then slowly pushing them off with the end of your nail works well. This step might be best done by adults or older kids, as it does take patience and going to fast can cause them to tear. However, even if they tear you can usually put the pieces together on the window and it looks unharmed.
Some Olympic Themed Templates to Get You Started (Tip: You might want to print them out at half or quarter size to make more managable window clings)
- Vancouver 2010 Logo (Tip: use lines of white or glow-in-the-dark to connect the other parts of the logo, also skip the lettering unless you are very skilled)
