This penguin pumpkin craft is an unique way to combine several different sized pumpkins to create a penguin.  This how to is for creating one that resembles an Adelie Penguin, but you can use the basic instructions in this how to to create other penguin species with pumpkins.  The Adelie is the simplest making this an easy craft for kids to do, especially since it does not involve any carving of the pumpkins.  Other species can be a little harder to recreate, but not too hard.  Using a photo found online can help determine how to change how you paint the pumpkins if you want to create other species, such as the African (more complex black and white belly and face), Emperor (not much harder than the Adelie with just adding yellow for the throat), or Macaroni penguins (just add some yellow feathers for the crown).

Supplies:

  • Large Tall Pumpkin for Body
  • Medium Round Pumpkin with at least a small stem for Head and Beak
  • Two Small Orange Similar Sized Small Pumpkins for Feet
  • One Somewhat Larger Small Pumpkin for Tail
  • Two Pieces of White Paper or 1 white paper and 1 black paper
  • White Paint
  • Black Paint
  • Orange Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue or Tape

1.  Paint the Tall Pumpkin for the Body mostly black.  It is okay if black paint ends up in the area for the white belly, as it can be painted over, although if you use a white craft or real pumpkin and can keep the black off the belly you can skip the white paint step.

2.  Paint the Medium Pumpkin for the Head and the Small Pumpkin for Tail entirely black.

3.  Paint the white belly on the Body Pumpkin.

4.  Paint small white circle outlines for the eyes on each side of the Head Pumpkin.

5.  Paint the stem of the Head Pumpkin mostly orange.  It is okay to have some of the black still showing on the stem, as Adelie Penguins do have feathers on the beginning of their beak.

6.  Lay the two pieces of paper on top of each other and fold in half.  Then cut out the shape of a large teardrop/raindrop to be the flippers.  If you are using only white paper color two of the flippers black.

7.  Tape or glue together a black flipper on top of a white flipper.  Repeat with the other two flippers.

8.  Tape or glue a flipper with black side up on to each side of the Body Pumpkin.  Just tape or glue to very top of the flipper to the body, so the flippers hang out to the side and even move somewhat realistically when the wind blows.

9.  The final step is to assemble the pumpkins to create the penguin.  Balance the Head Pumpkin with the stem forward on top of the Body Pumpkin.  Place the two small orange pumpkins in front of the Body Pumpkin to resemble the feet. Place the small black pumpkin behind the Body Pumpkin to resemble the tail.
