With the bugs starting to show themselves in the southern Illinois area, how about making an easy, recycled cup bug catcher? The kids will love making this simple craft. The example shown in the link was made from a cup from the local Dairy Queen in Marion, Illinois.
Most southern Illinois yards see lots of Cardinals - the state bird. Here are a few projects that will help you feed the Cardinals and any other wild birds that visit your yard. These are easy crafts that most kids enjoy doing and they will love watching the feathered friends who visit your yard.

Combine some of these bird-friendly craft projects with a trip to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge near Marion and Carterville. The Refuge Visitor's Center has displays set up for public viewing and in addition to scheduled programs, the Refuge has environmental education "Discovery Trunks" available for the public to borrow. There are several topic trunks available including birds. Smaller "discovery kits" are available also, including an owl pellet kit which is a great addition to learning about Illinois birds.
