May 5 is Cinco de Mayo and crafts are a great way to enjoy this fun day. Cooking may not be the same as crafts, but if you let the kids help make quesadillas, tacos or other Mexican-type food, they'll enjoy the process. In southern Illinois, there are Mexican restaurants such as Tequilas and La Fiesta in Marion, Illinois.
For easy Cinco de Mayo crafts and decorations, grab some colorful ribbons and make a decorative garland. Give the kids construction paper and ask them to draw pictures of sombreros, chiles, pinatas, etc. to color and cut out. Glue these to the ribbon then cut short (6-8 inches) lengths of other brightly-colored ribbon to tie in between the cutouts.
Check out this idea for recycled bottle maracas - a great craft for any age.
Since the weather is looking beautiful in southern Illinois for Cinco de Mayo, take the kids outside to enjoy some nature crafts. Find rocks that are of a size to paint and help the kids paint the rocks with the colors of the flag of Mexico - green, white and red - for Cinco de Mayo.
Whatever you do, have some fun with the kids and with crafts!
