Shaving cream hands is not only a fun (and somewhat messy) craft, but it is also one that involves the senses, making it a sensory craft. Beside sensory, this craft is also wonderful for developing color recognition and color mixing. The craft is somewhat messy so make sure that you aren’t distracted by anything once you start the craft or your child may take off with colored shaving cream on their hands and get it on who knows what.
For the craft, you will need a working space. This could be a tarp on the floor, a covered table, a sensory table, or even an empty sink works well. Once you find your location, you’ll want to make sure that you and your child are covered by an apron or paint shirt. You’ll also need food coloring and somewhat darker construction paper. Next it’s time for the actual craft. To start, using a can of shaving cream, dispense an amount that you think your child can handle. Squeeze the shaving cream onto your work area and let the child feel it and mix it around with their fingers. For younger children, keep a close eye on those hands so they don’t stick them in their mouths. After they get a feel around, it’s time to grab the food coloring. Start with one color first and pour a few drops into the shaving cream. Let your child mix the color around until the shaving cream is no longer white. You can then start adding different colors and watch your child laugh in delight as the color changes with the waving of his/her hands.
For the handprints, you can either wait until all the colors have mixed and then take your child’s hand and press it on the paper, or you can pause in between colors and make several handprints with different colors. The choice is up to you. Once you have imprinted your child’s hand on the paper, take it out of the child’s reach so it can dry. Don’t forget to write the child’s name and the date that the artwork was done to serve as a reminder.
