Cover of The Soggy Town of Hilltop
Why is it called The Soggy Town of Hilltop you might ask. Perhaps because the people drink from the top of their heads. Silly you think? Yeah it’s silly, but that’s what makes this rhyming picture book by Kevin McNamee so much fun.
In the hamlet of Hilltop, where chilly winds blow,
The High Council ruled the good people below.
This Council passed rules on whatever they’d think:
What to wear; what to eat; where to live; how to drink.
When the Council becomes bored, they make up the rule that the townspeople must drink water from the top of their heads. So the people follow, but their clothing gets wet, their sweaters shrink, they squish when they walk, and in winter, huge icicles hang from their nose.
Because of the silliness, the hamlet becomes a tourist attraction. Wouldn’t you want to watch people drinking water from the top of their heads? But one day, when a young boy asks them why they don’t drink with their mouth, the people seek the truth.
This is a fun, rhyming story that teaches young readers just because somebody tells you to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, it doesn’t mean you have to and Eugene Ruble’s illustrations give the story a classic fairy tale feel, sure to become a bedtime favorite.
