April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month has been dedicated to encouraging awareness, encouragement for individuals, and getting local communities involved in supporting children and families as well as efforts to keep our children safe.
One way we can all help support the effort of National Child Abuse Prevention Month is through books and helping our children to be aware of possible dangers, signs, and ways to help others. One out of five children in America are or have experienced some sort or degree of child abuse – if not your child one of their friends may be the victim of child abuse right this moment.
The following are three books available in the Lansing area I would recommend for children. At the end of this article you will find a few links where you can find a wealth of information, agencies, and activities to aid in the mission to stop Child Abuse and to get more involved in National Child Abuse Prevention Month
An excellent book for students is Child Abuse: "Why Do My Parents Hit Me?" by Kate Havelin. A easy to read and understand book Havelin provides information on possible causes and suggests ways to respond to certain situations. This book is not filled with facts and figures but a helpful tool for students who may be themselves in a child abuse situation or has a friend who is. Child Abuse : "Why Do My Parents Hit Me?" is avaible at Capital Area District Library Okemos Library and South Lansing Library. You can also find it at Barnes and Noble.
Another recommended reading for older children (suggested grades 6-12) is Child Abuse part of the Current Controversies (Bryan J. Grapes, book editor). This book starts off with a section "Is Child Abuse a Serious Problem?" and further sections cover causes, concerns, family law, foster care and other issues connected with child abuse. Child Abuse is available at the Downtown Lansing Library, the South Lansing Library, and Barnes and Noble
Abuse and Neglect by Sarah Medina; health consultant, John G. Samanich is geared for older children (grades 5-9) but is an excellent reference book that covers children’s rights and needs, several types of abuse, child neglect, getting help, and recovery from abuse. Abuse and Neglect is available at the Downtown Lansing Library, Barnes and Noble, and Schuler Books.
